International markets are vital for Bavaria and Upper Bavaria: Bavarian industries are currently making 53 percent of their sales abroad – and the tendency is rising.

Upper Bavaria today has about 60,000 exporting companies. The most important markets are in the neighboring states. Next to Austria, Italy, Switzerland and the Czech Republic are Bavaria’s most important markets. Almost 60 percent of Bavarian exports remain within the EU.

In 2011 the companies in the Free State of Bavaria have achieved another export record. Goods with a total value of approximately 160 bn EUR were exported, which is 11 % more than in the previous year.

The Bavarian export sector can look back on a highly successful business year 2011. Despite a slight dip in exports in the second half of the year, the companies were able to establish a new export record and to make up for the decline in production caused by the recession of 2009. The global economic recovery has been particularly beneficial for the Bavarian capital goods industry, which are achieving particularly high sales in Asian emerging markets
